When a Persistent Cough Needs a Clinic Visit

By Doc KulotPatient Education

A cough that lasts for weeks, interrupts sleep, produces blood, or comes with fever and breathing difficulty should not be brushed aside.

Coughs are common, especially after viral infections, but the duration and associated symptoms matter. Some cases improve with rest while others need evaluation for asthma, infection, reflux, or other causes.

Seek medical advice if you notice

  1. A cough lasting more than two to three weeks
  2. Fever, wheezing, or shortness of breath
  3. Chest pain or blood in mucus
  4. Weight loss or extreme tiredness
Pay attention when a cough changes your daily routine, sleep, or breathing comfort.
